Tartu & South Estonia by Car

University town cafés, berry wine in a castle, flooded forests, folk music in castle ruins, and the highest point in the Baltic states. South Estonia is the country's best-kept secret — and entirely car territory.

Why South Estonia Needs a Car

Tartu is reachable by bus — but Soomaa, Põltsamaa winery, Haanja highlands and the Rõuge valley are all off any bus map. The south rewards drivers.

wine_bar

Winery stops

Põltsamaa winery is on a side road 5 km off the main highway. You need a car to visit — and a designated driver to get back.

kayaking

Soomaa wilderness

The Soomaa bog and flood plain has no bus service whatsoever. A car is the only way to reach the canoe launch points and bog trails.

terrain

Highland roads

The Otepää and Haanja highlands are at their best on the winding back roads between the lakes and forests — all car-only routes.

castle

Viljandi Folk Festival

The Folk Festival in July draws 25,000 people to a small town. Getting there and parking efficiently requires your own car.

landscape

Rõuge valley

The Rõuge seven-lake valley is on a dead-end road 10 km from the nearest town. No bus, no taxi — car only.

schedule

Your own pace

South Estonia is best explored slowly — stopping at roadside stalls, walking into forests, staying until dusk. A car gives you that freedom.

6 South Estonia Highlights

From the university city to the highest hill in the Baltics — south Estonia is the most varied and least-visited part of the country.

Tartu Old Town

Tartu City

straighten185 km from Tallinn

Estonia's university city and intellectual capital — smaller than Tallinn but deeply engaging. The town hall square, the ruins of the 13th-century cathedral on Toome Hill, and the Emajõgi riverside are all beautiful. The café culture is excellent (Tartu people are famously welcoming) and the farmers' market on Saturdays overflows with produce. A very comfortable overnight base for the south Estonia loop.

Põltsamaa Winery

Põltsamaa, Central Estonia

straighten130 km from Tallinn

Estonia's most celebrated winery produces berry wines from local currants, cloudberries, and cranberries — entirely unique to Baltic viticulture. The estate is set around a ruined medieval castle and an old manor. Tastings are available, and the shop sells bottles to take home. A perfect stop between Tallinn and Tartu — and a genuine surprise for wine lovers expecting only grapes.

Soomaa National Park

Pärnu & Viljandi counties

straighten130 km from Tallinn

One of Estonia's most extraordinary landscapes — a vast bog and flood plain wilderness where rivers overflow their banks in spring and autumn, creating a temporary “fifth season.” The bog boardwalk, the canoe routes through flooded oak forest, and the traditional dugout canoe (haabjas) experience are all unique. Soomaa is the kind of place that stays with you for years.

Viljandi Lake & Old Town

Viljandi, South-Central Estonia

straighten160 km from Tallinn

Arguably Estonia's most charming small city — castle ruins on a hill above a lake, a vibrant arts scene, independent cafés, and the famous Viljandi Folk Music Festival every July. The lakeside park and the hanging bridge are perfect for an afternoon stroll. The ruins of the Teutonic Order castle give panoramic views and a strong sense of medieval history.

Otepää Highlands

Valga County, South Estonia

straighten200 km from Tallinn

Estonia's only proper highland area — rolling hills, mixed forest, and the pristine Pühajärv lake. In summer it's hiking and swimming country; in winter it transforms into Estonia's ski resort and biathlon venue. The winding roads between the hills are some of the most enjoyable driving in the country. The small spa hotels by the lake are excellent value.

Haanja & Suur Munamägi

Võru County, Far South Estonia

straighten250 km from Tallinn

The highest point in the Baltic states — Suur Munamägi (318 m) — sits in this deeply forested nature park on the Russian border. The observation tower gives a 360° panorama over a sea of trees. The ancient forest roads of Haanja wind through pine and spruce stands unchanged for centuries. The nearby Rõuge ‘singing valley’ (Lauluoru) with its seven lakes is one of Estonia's most magical landscapes.

Best Season: Late May to September

Late May brings spring wildflowers to Soomaa and the first swimming weather to Pühajärv. July is the highlight month — Viljandi Folk Festival (last weekend), warm lake swimming, and berry season in the countryside. August is high summer: Soomaa canoe trips, Peipus beaches, and Põltsamaa berry wine. September starts the autumn colour season in Haanja and Otepää.
