Pärnu & South Estonia — Beach Road Trip
Estonia's warmest waters, highest dunes and most unspoilt coastline stretch south from Pärnu all the way to the Latvian border. Almost none of it is reachable without a car.
While most visitors head to the beaches north of Tallinn, Estonia's finest coastal driving is to the south. The stretch from Pärnu down to the Latvian border combines the country's most famous resort beach with wild dune coasts, remote fishing villages, and one of Europe's best spring bird migration sites — all connected by quiet roads through pine forest. By late May the water is warm, the wildflowers are out on the dunes, and the roads are empty.
7 Beaches Worth the Drive South
Why This Coast in Summer
- South Estonia sea water reaches 18–20°C by July — warmer than the north coast by 2–3 degrees
- May is peak bird migration at Kabli — tens of thousands of birds pass the shore in a single morning
- Late May: dune wildflowers in bloom, pine forest fragrant, almost no other tourists
- Pärnu's main beach season opens officially in June but the promenade is walkable from April
Suggested Route: 2 Days
Tallinn to Pärnu — Settle In
Tallinn → Audru Delta (15 min west of Pärnu) → Pärnu Beach → Valgeranna Dunes
Drive the 2-hour coastal road south, stop at the Audru delta for a walk, arrive in Pärnu for lunch. Afternoon on the main beach, evening walk along the promenade. After dinner, drive to Valgeranna to watch the sun set over the dunes.
South to the Latvian Border
Pärnu → Tõstamaa Peninsula (40 km) → Häädemeeste Dunes → Kabli → Ikla Border Beach
Start with the Tõstamaa peninsula loop in the morning, then head south along the wild dune coast. Stop at Häädemeeste for a dune walk, Kabli for birdwatching, and finish at Ikla — Estonia's southernmost beach. Return via the main highway.
Who This Road Trip Is For
The Pärnu and South Estonia beach road trip suits anyone who wants more than a single resort beach. Families will love Pärnu's safe shallow bay and the calm Audru delta. Couples looking for a romantic escape will find Valgeranna's dunes and the Tõstamaa peninsula coast hauntingly beautiful. Birdwatchers and nature photographers should plan their trip for May when Kabli migration is at its peak. And anyone who simply wants to stand on a wild, empty Baltic beach with no one else in sight should drive straight to Ikla.
