Estonia Lighthouse Coast

Six historic lighthouses from limestone sea cliffs to remote Baltic islands. Estonia's lighthouse coast is one of Northern Europe's most atmospheric coastal drives — and every stop requires a car.

Why Estonia's Lighthouses Need a Car

Every lighthouse on this route sits at the end of a coastal track, on a remote headland, or on an island — places where buses simply don't go.

explore

Cliff-top access

Pakri and Suurupi lighthouses are reached only by forest track. No public transport reaches either headland.

directions_boat

Ferry connections

Hiiumaa's three lighthouses require the Haapsalu ferry and then 30–45 km of island driving. A car is essential on both ferry and island.

photo_camera

Golden hour flexibility

The best lighthouse light is at sunrise and sunset. Only with a rental car can you time your arrival for perfect photography conditions.

schedule

Combine multiple stops

A full lighthouse circuit (Pakri + Hiiumaa's three) is impossible in one day by public transport. By car it's a comfortable two-day trip.

luggage

Pack your own kit

Remote lighthouses have no facilities. A car means you can pack camping gear, food, and photographic equipment for a multi-day coastal expedition.

sailing

Island logistics

Reaching Osmussaar requires driving to a specific boat launch on the Noarootsi Peninsula — 20 km from the nearest town on a dead-end road.

6 Lighthouses to Visit

From day trips from Tallinn to remote island adventures — Estonia's lighthouse coast spans the entire western coastline.

Pakri Lighthouse

Paldiski, West Estonia

straighten45 km from Tallinn

The most accessible lighthouse from Tallinn — perched on a dramatic limestone sea cliff 22 metres above the Baltic. The cliffs stretch for several kilometres and the views are some of the finest coastal scenery in mainland Estonia. Built in 1889, the brick tower still operates as an active lighthouse.

Suurupi Upper Lighthouse

Harjumaa, North Estonia

straighten35 km from Tallinn

Twin lighthouses in a peaceful coastal manor estate. The Upper lighthouse dates to 1760 and sits in a forested headland above a quiet bay. It's a gentle 20-minute coastal walk from the car park, through pine forest to the clifftop. Rarely crowded even in summer.

Kõpu Lighthouse

Hiiumaa Island

straighten160 km from Tallinn (incl. ferry)

Built in 1531, Kõpu is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the Baltic Sea — and one of the oldest in the world. A massive stone tower embedded in dense pine forest. Climb the 163 steps for a panoramic view over the island treetops and open sea. Unmissable for any lighthouse enthusiast.

Tahkuna Lighthouse

Hiiumaa Island, North Cape

straighten170 km from Tallinn (incl. ferry)

The northernmost point of Hiiumaa — a 42-metre cast-iron lighthouse (1875) at the end of a long gravel causeway over the sea. A haunting bell memorial for the Estonia ferry disaster stands nearby. In summer, the evening light here is extraordinary. In winter, the surrounding sea can freeze creating a ghostly arctic landscape.

Ristna Lighthouse

Hiiumaa Island, West Cape

straighten185 km from Tallinn (incl. ferry)

The westernmost point of Estonia — a slender red-and-white iron tower standing alone in coastal meadow above the open Baltic. The sunsets from Ristna are legendary, with the lighthouse silhouetted against the sea. The wild, windswept coastline here feels like the edge of the world.

Osmussaar Lighthouse

West Estonian Archipelago

straighten100 km from Tallinn

Estonia's most remote and atmospheric lighthouse — on a tiny uninhabited island in the open Baltic. Access is by small boat from the Noarootsi Peninsula. The island has an abandoned Soviet military base and ancient limestone alvars. The lighthouse keeper's cottage can be rented overnight for a truly solitary Baltic island experience.

Best Season for Lighthouse Hopping

May to September is ideal for the lighthouse route. Hiiumaa is at its most beautiful in June when the coastal meadows bloom with orchids and the evenings are impossibly long. Midsummer Night (June 23) at Ristna — the westernmost point — with the sun barely setting, is one of Estonia's most memorable experiences.
