Hiiumaa Island Travel Guide
Estonia's second-largest island rewards slow travel — ancient lighthouses, a solemn sea memorial, and empty pine-forest roads that see almost no tourist traffic.
Book a car
Why Hiiumaa Requires a Car
Hiiumaa has almost no public transport. A car on the ferry is not just convenient — it is the only way to see the island.
Car Ferry from Rohuküla
Take the ferry from Rohuküla (near Haapsalu) to Heltermaa. Cars book online — bring your rental car and drive off onto the island.
Island Is 2,668 km²
Hiiumaa is Estonia's second-largest island. Kõpu is 40 km from the ferry, Ristna is 55 km. Distances add up fast without a car.
Ferry Timing Flexibility
Ferries run several times daily. A car means you catch the early morning sailing and maximize island time.
Lighthouses Are Remote
Ristna, Kõpu, and Tahkuna sit at peninsula tips with no bus service. Each requires a dedicated drive.
Overnight Gear
Most visitors stay at least one night. A car means you pack properly for the island — no hostel lockers needed.
Shared Cost Advantage
Ferry + rental car split between two people costs less per person than flights to any other Baltic island destination.
6 Must-Visit Spots in Hiiumaa
From the world's oldest working lighthouse to a haunting sea memorial — Hiiumaa holds more history per km² than almost any island in the Baltic.
Hiiumaa in Summer
Summer highlights
- Ristna sunsets last until 11 pm in June — the longest golden hour in Estonia
- Kassari meadows bloom with rare coastal orchids in June and early July
- Orjaku bird station: tens of thousands of migratory birds in May and August-September
- Sheltered bays warm to 20°C by late July — good swimming near Kassari
Ferry & driving tips
- Book the car ferry in advance: rohuküla-heltermaa.ee — summer sailings fill up
- Island roads are narrow and gravel in places — compact car works fine
- Fuel up in Kärdla — there is no other petrol station on the island
- Plan overnight stay: the last ferry back is early evening
The Hiiumaa Island Circuit
A full island loop hitting all four lighthouses and the Estonia memorial — best as a two-day trip.
Rohuküla Ferry → Kärdla
Ferry from Rohuküla. Drive 20 km to Kärdla. Museum + coffee.
Tahkuna Lighthouse
25 km. Estonia memorial + lighthouse walk on the north tip.
Kõpu Lighthouse
40 km west. Oldest lighthouse in the world. Pine forest walk.
Ristna Lighthouse & Kassari
15 km + 20 km. Westernmost point, then Kassari chapel and meadows.
Orjaku → Return Ferry
Bird station visit. Return via Heltermaa ferry to mainland.
Hiiumaa has only one restaurant reliably open year-round (in Kärdla). Pack food for day two or confirm opening hours before visiting.
Who This Trip Is For
Hiiumaa attracts slow travelers who want an island with no crowds, couples seeking peaceful lighthouse coast weekends, nature lovers and birdwatchers (especially during migration), and those drawn to the history of the MV Estonia disaster. It is quieter and less touristed than Saaremaa — which is exactly its appeal.
