Getting to Saaremaa: Virtsu–Kuivastu Ferry
The mainland ferry crosses from Virtsu to Kuivastu (Muhu island) in 25 minutes, then a causeway connects Muhu to Saaremaa. Ferries run frequently — hourly in summer, less often off-season. Book car spaces online in advance during July and August as the ferry fills quickly. Drive time from Tallinn to Virtsu is approximately 2 hours.
Why Explore Saaremaa by Car
Saaremaa is large — 2,673 km². Its highlights are spread across the island with no meaningful public transport between them. A car is the only way to see more than Kuressaare.
Island Scale
Kuressaare is 40 km from Angla, 50 km from Panga, and 55 km from Sõrve tip. A car links them; the bus timetable does not.
Kaali Crater Access
The meteorite crater is 20 km from Kuressaare on a rural road with no bus connection — car only.
Sõrve Peninsula
The 35 km peninsula road to Sääre lighthouse is one of the most atmospheric drives in Estonia — impossible without a car.
Panga Cliff Timing
Arrive at the north coast cliffs in storm season and watch waves hit the base. You leave when you're ready, not when the next bus runs.
Vilsandi Entry Points
The national park's coastal access trails start at car parks reached only by forest road — no bus service exists.
Windmill Hopping
Angla, Kogula, and Laimjala windmills are spread across north Saaremaa. A car loops them in 2 hours.

Saaremaa in Summer
Summer highlights
- June: Panga cliff meadows and Vilsandi alvars covered in rare orchids — among the best in Estonia
- Grey seals at Vilsandi visible from shore in June–September before they move offshore
- July: Kuressaare castle days — medieval markets, jousting, and concerts in the fortress courtyard
- Saaremaa beaches are clean and quiet in July — warm, shallow, and far less crowded than Pärnu
Driving tips
- Winter tyres mandatory Dec 1–Mar 1 — included with all CarRental.ee cars
- Book ferry car spaces in advance for July–August — the Virtsu ferry fills quickly
- Island roads are well-maintained; some coastal tracks to Vilsandi require an estate car or SUV
- Allow at least 2 full days on the island — rushing Saaremaa is a mistake
