Saaremaa Island by Car

Estonia's largest island is a world of medieval castles, meteorite craters, windmills, and sea cliffs. It's too spread out for tours, too beautiful to rush. The right way is a rental car and 2–3 days.

Why Saaremaa Needs a Car

Saaremaa is 2,673 km² — the size of Luxembourg. Its attractions are spread across the entire island. A bus covers the main road. A car covers everything else.

Island scale

Kuressaare to the Sõrve tip is 70 km. Kuressaare to Panga Cliff is 55 km in the opposite direction. Bus routes connect the main towns but miss every peninsula.

Ferry with your car

The Virtsu–Kuivastu ferry takes 30 minutes. Driving on with your rental car costs €12–18 return — a fraction of an island tour price.

Peninsula access

Sõrve, Tagamõisa, Harilaid — the most dramatic parts of Saaremaa are at the ends of peninsula roads with zero bus service.

Your timetable

Panga Cliff at sunset, Kaali meteor crater in the morning, Vilsandi coast at low tide — none of this works on a bus schedule.

Value

Renting a car for 2 days on Saaremaa costs less than a guided island tour for one person — and you see twice as much.

The windmills at Angla, the cliff edge at Panga, the castle at dusk — golden hour and sunrise require flexible timing that only a car provides.

6 Essential Stops on Saaremaa

Medieval to prehistoric, windswept coast to ancient forest — Saaremaa packs an extraordinary range into one island.

01castle

Kuressaare Castle

Kuressaare, Saaremaa

straighten5 km from Saaremaa ferry

The only completely intact medieval castle in the Baltic states. Built in the 14th century with a moat that still holds water, the castle stands in the centre of Saaremaa's small capital. The regional museum inside is excellent — 2 hours easily spent here.

Kaali Meteorite Crater

Central Saaremaa

straighten18 km from Kuressaare

A lake formed by a meteorite impact 3,500 years ago — the largest in populated Europe at the time of impact. The crater is 110 m in diameter and 22 m deep. Ancient Estonians considered it sacred. Today it sits in a quiet forest clearing.

Panga Cliff

Northern Saaremaa

straighten55 km from Kuressaare

The highest sea cliff in the Baltics at 21 m. The limestone edge drops straight into the sea — dramatic in all weather. In winter, ice formations cling to the rock face. In storm season, waves crash 15 m up the cliff.

Angla Windmills

Leisi Parish, Saaremaa

straighten40 km from Kuressaare

Five traditional wooden windmills standing in a row on a low hill — the most photographed landmark on the island. The largest cluster of preserved windmills in Estonia. An open-air museum explains their history and mechanism.

Sõrve Peninsula

Southern Saaremaa

straighten70 km from Kuressaare

A 35 km finger of land pointing south into the Baltic Sea. At the tip: a lighthouse, WWII bunkers, and the most wind-swept landscape in Estonia. The peninsula saw fierce battles in 1944 — the landscape is haunted and beautiful in equal measure.

Vilsandi National Park

Western Saaremaa

straighten45 km from Kuressaare

A biosphere reserve of offshore islands, alvar grasslands, and grey seal haul-out beaches. You can walk to the Vilsandi lighthouse at low tide. The western shore is one of the least disturbed coastlines in the Baltic — entirely silent except for waves and birds.
