Põlva County — Sandstone Cliffs & Deep Forest

Red sandstone river canyons, meteor craters, ancient hill forts, and forests that stretch to the Russian border. Põlva County is Estonia's most geological landscape.

Põlva County occupies the south-east corner of Estonia — a landscape shaped by ancient rivers cutting through Devonian sandstone, leaving behind canyon walls, cliff inscriptions, and some of the most unusual scenery in the Baltics. The county's main attraction, Taevaskoja, is entirely unlike anything elsewhere in Estonia: sheer red sandstone cliffs drop to a clear river, and the canyon walls carry inscriptions from 18th and 19th-century visitors who came to marvel at what they called a natural cathedral. Everything worth seeing here requires a car, and the roads are quiet enough to make driving a pleasure in itself.

7 Highlights of Põlva County

01landscape

Taevaskoja Sandstone Cliffs

Põlva Parish · 190 km from Tallinn

The most dramatic riverbank scenery in Estonia — towering red sandstone cliffs up to 24 metres tall, carved by the Ahja River over millennia. The lower cliff face is etched with centuries of carved inscriptions from travellers and scholars who came to marvel at it. The setting is almost otherworldly: dark pines above, red rock faces dropping to clear river water below. The Suur Taevaskoda (Great Hall of the Sky) is the main viewpoint; a 3 km trail links it to Väike Taevaskoda (Small Hall) through riverside forest.

Ahja River Valley

Põlva & Põlva Parish · 185–195 km from Tallinn

The Ahja River has carved a remarkably beautiful canyon through the Devonian sandstone of south-east Estonia — a protected landscape of meandering river bends, red cliff walls, and dense forest. The 10-kilometre riverside trail between Taevaskoja and Põlva is one of the finest hiking routes in south Estonia, passing through ancient flood-plain forest and below several small cliff faces before reaching the town.

Põlva Town & Maasuvilad

Põlva City · 190 km from Tallinn

Põlva is the quiet county seat — a small Estonian market town with a handsome Lutheran church, traditional wooden houses, and the Maasuvilad open-air resort by Lake Põlva. The lake beach is one of south Estonia's best inland swimming spots: clean sand, calm water, and a pleasant summer café. The local agricultural show held in August is one of the last traditional rural fairs in Estonia.

Kiidjärv & Palo Hill Fort

Põlva Parish · 195 km from Tallinn

A prehistoric hill fort rising above Lake Kiidjärv — one of the most atmospherically sited ancient fortifications in south Estonia. The earthwork ramparts are overgrown with pine and spruce, and the view from the top across the lake and the surrounding forest is completely unspoilt. The lake itself is excellent for swimming and kayaking in summer.

Ilumetsa Meteor Craters

Võru-Põlva border area · 210 km from Tallinn

A field of meteor impact craters hidden in dense south Estonian forest — the largest crater, Põrguhaud (Hell's Grave), is 80 metres wide and 12 metres deep, now filled with dark still water. The smaller Inimesehaud (Man's Grave) crater has a similarly mysterious atmosphere. An easy 1.5 km loop trail connects both craters through old-growth forest; the site receives relatively few visitors and has an eerie, primeval quality.

Leevijõe & Ancient Sand Dunes

South Põlva County · 200–215 km from Tallinn

South-east Estonia has a landscape unlike the rest of the country — a gently rolling terrain of ancient post-glacial sand dunes now covered in mixed forest, with small rivers winding through the hollows. The Leevijõe river valley near the Russian border is barely visited and has a haunting quality: the forest is old, the roads are empty, and the villages are small and traditional.

Vastseliina Castle Ruins

Võru-Põlva border · 215 km from Tallinn

The most dramatically ruined castle in south Estonia — a 14th-century Livonian Order fortress atop a hill above the Võhandu River, crumbled into spectacular red-brick fragments with walls and towers still standing to height. The site is freely accessible, has no entrance fee, and offers superb views across the rolling south Estonian landscape. Combine with the Ilumetsa craters for a full day in the far south-east.

Suggested Route: 2 Days in Põlva County

Day 1

Tartu Base to the Cliffs

Tartu → Põlva Town → Taevaskoja (Suur + Väike) → Ahja River trail → Kiidjärv lake

Drive from Tartu south to Põlva for a morning coffee stop, then continue to Taevaskoja. Walk the cliff trail in the morning light — arrive by 9 am to have the site largely to yourself. Afternoon: drive to Kiidjärv for a swim and to see the hill fort. Stay in or near Põlva.

Day 2

Into the Deep South-East

Põlva → Ilumetsa Craters → Vastseliina Ruins → Leevijõe Valley → return via Võru

Early morning at Ilumetsa — the craters are quietest before 10 am. Continue south to Vastseliina castle ruins for a 45-minute explore. Drive the Leevijõe valley roads for the landscape, then head to Võru for lunch before returning north.

Who This Guide Is For

Põlva County is best suited to travellers who want the Estonia that isn't in the guidebooks: the geological oddities, the meteor craters, the sandstone canyons, the hill forts above quiet lakes. Hikers and trail walkers will find the Ahja River valley trail and the Taevaskoja cliff walk genuinely rewarding. Photographers will find the red sandstone cliffs, the castle ruins, and the crater lakes among the most unusual compositions in the country. And anyone who simply wants to drive south on quiet roads through rolling forest, stopping where instinct suggests, will find Põlva County perfectly suited to that kind of travel.

Drive South from Tallinn or Tartu

CarRental.ee offers cars from Tallinn — Taevaskoja is a 2.5-hour drive south on the main highway via Tartu. Pick up a car in the morning, drive to the cliffs by mid-morning, explore the Ahja valley in the afternoon, and stay the night in Põlva or Võru before the second day's exploration. The south-east of Estonia is the quietest, most geological part of the country — and it rewards the journey entirely.

The Cliffs Are Waiting

Red sandstone canyons, meteor craters, ruined castles, and forest that goes on for ever. South-east Estonia is two and a half hours from Tallinn.
