Estonia's Hidden Gems by Car

A 19th-century sand quarry that left behind a labyrinth of white sandstone caves — the largest bat hibernation site in the Baltics, home to 7,000+ bats in winter. The former summer residence of Estonian President Päts — a grand park on the edge of a dramatic cliff over the Gulf of Finland. A river gorge cuts through the limestone cliff, creating waterfalls and a coastal landscape unlike anything else in Estonia. Almost no foreign tourists.

A near-inaccessible finger of land jutting into the sea on Estonia's west coast, completely undeveloped and unreachable without a car. Juniper meadows, erratic boulders, and a coastline where you can walk for an hour without seeing another person. Locals barely know it exists.

A spring-fed lake of extraordinary clarity — you can see the bottom at 8 m depth — surrounded by a limestone esker ridge. The ruins of a medieval bishop's castle sit on the ridge above the lake. Local divers come here for the clear water; photographers for the castle reflection.

A UNESCO-inscribed smoke sauna tradition is preserved here in its purest form. A cluster of traditional farm saunas still operated as they were 300 years ago — wood-fired, no chimney, the smoke fills the sauna before being vented. The only place in the world where you can experience this continuously living tradition.
