Saaremaa Island by Car
Estonia's largest island is a world of medieval castles, meteorite craters, windmills, and sea cliffs. It's too spread out for tours, too beautiful to rush. The right way is a rental car and 2–3 days.

Why Saaremaa Needs a Car
Saaremaa is 2,673 km² — the size of Luxembourg. Its attractions are spread across the entire island. A bus covers the main road. A car covers everything else.
Island scale
Kuressaare to the Sõrve tip is 70 km. Kuressaare to Panga Cliff is 55 km in the opposite direction. Bus routes connect the main towns but miss every peninsula.
Ferry with your car
The Virtsu–Kuivastu ferry takes 30 minutes. Driving on with your rental car costs €12–18 return — a fraction of an island tour price.
Peninsula access
Sõrve, Tagamõisa, Harilaid — the most dramatic parts of Saaremaa are at the ends of peninsula roads with zero bus service.
Your timetable
Panga Cliff at sunset, Kaali meteor crater in the morning, Vilsandi coast at low tide — none of this works on a bus schedule.
Value
Renting a car for 2 days on Saaremaa costs less than a guided island tour for one person — and you see twice as much.
Photography
The windmills at Angla, the cliff edge at Panga, the castle at dusk — golden hour and sunrise require flexible timing that only a car provides.
6 Essential Stops on Saaremaa
Medieval to prehistoric, windswept coast to ancient forest — Saaremaa packs an extraordinary range into one island.
Saaremaa in Summer: The Island at Its Best
Summer highlights
- White nights in June — Panga Cliff at midnight sun: extraordinary
- Swimming at Järve beach and Mändjala — longest sandy beaches on the island
- Alvar grasslands in bloom — juniper, orchids, limestone pavement flowers
- Grey seal boat trips from Roomassaare harbour in July–August
Ferry & practical tips
- Book the Virtsu–Kuivastu ferry in advance in July–August — sells out weeks ahead
- Fuel up in Kuressaare before heading to remote peninsulas — no stations at Sõrve or Vilsandi
- All CarRental.ee cars are permitted on the Saaremaa ferry — no restrictions
- Accommodation in Kuressaare is easiest; plan 2 nights minimum for the full circuit
The Saaremaa Circuit: 2 Days
A complete loop of the island hitting every major attraction in two days.
Tallinn → Virtsu ferry → Kuressaare
200 km + 30 min ferry. Arrive for lunch. Walk the castle moat and old town.
Kuressaare → Kaali → Angla
Drive north. Meteorite crater and windmill hill in one afternoon loop.
Panga Cliff
Continue north to the cliff edge. The sun sets over the Baltic from the highest point in the Baltics.
Sõrve Peninsula
Drive the full length of the peninsula — 35 km — to the lighthouse tip. WWII bunkers, seabirds, total isolation.
Vilsandi coast → ferry back
Drive west to the biosphere reserve coast. Then return to Kuivastu for the evening ferry.
Add Muhu island as a half-day on Day 1 — the Virtsu ferry lands on Muhu. The Stone Farm (Koguva village) is one of the most beautifully preserved traditional farms in Estonia.
