Lahemaa National Park by Car

Estonia's largest national park stretches 725 km² along the northern coast — ancient manor houses, pristine bogs, captains' villages, and a boulder-strewn coastline. It takes a car and 1–2 days to do it properly.

Why Lahemaa Needs a Car

The park is 725 km² with villages, bogs, and manor houses scattered across gravel roads. Public buses reach the edge. A car reaches everything else.

Spread-out park

Palmse, Käsmu, Altja, Viru Bog, Juminda — these are 20–40 km apart. Connecting them on buses would take two days of waiting.

explore

Peninsula dead ends

Käsmu and Juminda sit at the end of peninsula roads with no onward route. A bus drops you at the junction — a car takes you to the sea.

schedule

Your own timetable

Sunrise at Viru Bog, lunch at Altja, sunset at Käsmu. None of this is possible on the one bus that runs through the park per day.

forest

Forest tracks

Between the villages, the best trails start from gravel forest roads. No bus route, no problem with a car.

hotel

Overnight flexibility

Sagadi Manor has guest rooms. Altja has a farmstay. A car lets you stay deep in the park instead of commuting from Tallinn.

Käsmu Village

Lahemaa NP, Harju County

straighten85 km from Tallinn

A former sea captains' village where every house has a story. The boulder-strewn coast, small maritime museum, and quiet lanes feel utterly removed from the 21st century. The village sits at the end of a peninsula — a car is the only practical way in.
