Lääne-Viru County — Lahemaa & Beyond

Estonia's largest national park, its most immersive castle, pristine coastal villages, and bogs that stretch to the horizon. Lääne-Viru County is Estonia's most rewarding county for self-drive exploration.

Lääne-Viru County stretches along Estonia's north coast from the eastern edge of Tallinn's commuter belt to the city of Rakvere. Its most famous feature is Lahemaa National Park — 725 km² of protected wilderness that encompasses bogs, ancient manor estates, sea captain's villages, and one of the most scenic coastlines in the Baltic states. The county also contains Rakvere, home to Estonia's most visited castle. Almost all of it requires a car: the park's key sites are spread over 40 km of internal roads with no public transport between them.

7 Highlights of Lääne-Viru County

01park

Lahemaa National Park

Harju & Lääne-Viru border · 60–80 km from Tallinn

Estonia's oldest and largest national park — 725 km² of pristine coastline, ancient manor houses, dense pine and spruce forest, and the famous Viru Bog boardwalk. Lahemaa is the single best reason to rent a car in Estonia: the park contains at least half a dozen distinct destinations (Palmse Manor, Sagadi Manor, Altja fishing village, Käsmu sea captain's village, Viru Bog, Oandu nature trail) that are spread across 40 km of park road and have no meaningful bus connections between them.

Rakvere Castle

Rakvere City · 100 km from Tallinn

The most hands-on castle experience in Estonia — not a ruin but a fully reconstructed living history site with blacksmiths, archery, underground dungeons, a medieval tavern, and regular jousting demonstrations. Inside the original 13th-century walls you can spend a genuine half-day. The bronze aurochs statue on the hill outside the castle is an iconic Estonian landmark.

Palmse Manor

Lahemaa National Park · 75 km from Tallinn

The showpiece manor house of Lahemaa — a perfectly restored 18th-century Baltic-German estate with a formal park, distillery, granary museum, stable café, and a swan pond. The main building's pale yellow facade and symmetrical wings are among the most photographed manor exteriors in Estonia. The manor grounds make an excellent picnic spot between the bog walk and the coast.

Viru Bog Boardwalk

Lahemaa National Park · 65 km from Tallinn

Estonia's most famous and most accessible bog — a 3.5 km wooden boardwalk through an open peat landscape of cottongrass, cloudberries, cranberries, and eerie bog pools. The 360-degree horizon and absolute silence make it one of the most photogenic landscapes in the country. Sunrise and the golden hour just before sunset are extraordinary.

Käsmu Sea Captain's Village

Lahemaa, Lääne-Viru coast · 80 km from Tallinn

A remarkably preserved 19th-century sea captain's village on a granite peninsula — white limestone boulders, clear water, wooden houses, and a small maritime museum. The village became wealthy from sea captaining and smuggling; today it feels entirely unspoilt. The boulder beach at sunset is one of the most beautiful spots on Estonia's north coast.

Altja Fishing Village

Lahemaa National Park · 82 km from Tallinn

The most authentic fishing village in Estonia — a collection of thatched timber cottages, net sheds, wooden swing sets, and a traditional tavern all preserved exactly as they were a century ago. The village is part of the national park and has no permanent commercial development. The old tavern (kõrts) serves traditional Estonian food and home-brewed kali.

Toolse Castle Ruins

Lääne-Viru Coast · 90 km from Tallinn

A ruined 15th-century coastal fortress built on a rocky sea promontory — the sea has eroded the headland on three sides, making the red-brick ruins seem to emerge from the waves. Far less visited than Rakvere, Toolse is hauntingly atmospheric: you can climb inside the roofless towers and look out over the Gulf of Finland with no fence, no queue, and no entrance fee.

Who This Guide Is For

Lääne-Viru County is the top choice for first-time visitors to Estonia who want to see the best of the country's natural and historical landscapes. Families with children will find Rakvere Castle genuinely engrossing — the interactive medieval experiences keep older children occupied for hours. Nature lovers should dedicate a full day to the Lahemaa loop: bog, manor, fishing village, and coast. Photographers will find the Käsmu boulder beach at sunset and the Toolse ruins above the sea among the most dramatic compositions in the country. And hikers have the Oandu primeval forest trail and the Viru Bog boardwalk within the same park.
