Estonia Spring Road Trip
April and May are Estonia's best-kept secrets. Wildflower carpets, a million migrating birds, orchid meadows, and almost no other tourists. Spring is when Estonia belongs entirely to you.

Why Spring in Estonia Needs a Car
Spring's best moments — wildflower peaks, bird migration pulses, orchid blooms — last only days. A rental car lets you follow the season, not the bus schedule.
Wildflower timing
Wood anemone carpets peak for about 10 days in early May. Without a car you're at the mercy of bus schedules, not the blooms.
Bird migration access
Matsalu's observation towers and coastal meadows have no bus connection. The biggest migration events happen at dawn — only possible with a car.
Unpaved forest tracks
Spring wildflower sites in Lahemaa and Haanja are on gravel forest roads that don't appear on any bus map.
Chase clear skies
April weather is unpredictable. A car lets you drive 50 km south if northern Estonia is cloudy — following the sun for wildflower photography.
Island ferry flexibility
Getting to Saaremaa's orchid meadows requires a car ferry. The schedule is fixed but with your own car you can explore the whole island freely.
Rural farm stays
The best spring accommodation is working farms and forest guesthouses — all in the countryside and unreachable without private transport.
6 Spring Destinations
From the north coast to the southern highlands — Estonia's most extraordinary spring experiences all require a car.
When to Go: April vs May
Late April is for birdwatching at Matsalu and the first woodland flowers. Early May is the peak of the wood anemone season — white carpets in every Lahemaa forest. Late May brings Saaremaa's orchids and warm enough evenings for outdoor dining. For a single week, early May is the sweet spot: everything is blooming and the tourist crowds haven't arrived yet.
The 3-Day Spring Loop
A spring circuit covering the north coast, west islands, and south highlands — timed for maximum wildflower and birding impact.
Tallinn → Keila-Joa → Lahemaa
Morning at the waterfall. Afternoon in Lahemaa forest. Walk the Viru Bog boardwalk at golden hour. Overnight in Käsmu.
Käsmu → Matsalu (via coast road)
2 hrs west along the coast. Arrive early for morning birding at Matsalu observation tower. The dawn chorus here is unforgettable.
Matsalu → Virtsu Ferry → Saaremaa
30-min ferry crossing. Drive to Viidumäe Reserve for orchid meadows. Overnight in Kuressaare.
Saaremaa → Tartu (via mainland)
Ferry back to Virtsu, then south-east to Tartu. Spring riverside walk along the Emajõgi.
Tartu → Haanja → Tallinn
60 km south to Suur Munamägi. Green panorama from the tower. Return to Tallinn via the Via Baltica.
Spring weather in Estonia is changeable. Pack layers and waterproof boots — bog trails in Lahemaa can be wet underfoot until mid-May. The reward is forest solitude and wildflowers at every step.
