Estonia's Best Lakes by Car

Over 1,200 lakes, the cleanest freshwater in Europe, and sandy shores with no crowds. Estonia's lake swimming culture is extraordinary — and all the best spots are only reachable by car.

Book a car

Why Estonia's Lakes Need a Car

The best lake beaches are on narrow forest roads with no public transport. A rental car is the only way to reach the clear water before anyone else does.

water

1,200+ lakes to choose from

Estonia has one of the highest lake densities in Europe. The vast majority have no official beach, no facilities, and no bus route — just clear water and empty shore.

Warm enough to swim in summer

Shallow Estonian lakes heat up quickly. Viitna, Pühajärv and Võrtsjärv reach 22–25°C in July — comparable to Mediterranean sea temperature.

forest

Forest track access

The Kurtna lake district and Peipus shore villages are reached via gravel forest roads. Only a car can navigate these routes reliably.

local_fire_department

Evening bonfires

RMK fire pits at many lake shores mean you can swim all day and have a bonfire in the evening — a classic Estonian summer experience only possible with your own car.

fishing

Fishing and foraging

Perch, pike, and bream are plentiful in Estonian lakes. A rental car means you can carry fishing gear and move between lakes looking for the best spot.

Dawn fog photography

Lake fog at sunrise lasts only 30 minutes. With a rental car you can be at the waterside at 5:00 AM before any bus has started running.

6 Lakes Worth the Drive

From the Holy Lake of Otepää to the amber-water forest pools of Kurtna — Estonia's lakes are diverse, clean, and almost always empty.

Pühajärv — The Holy Lake

Otepää, South Estonia

straighten200 km from Tallinn

The most beautiful swimming lake in Estonia — a deep, clear lake surrounded by forested hills near Otepää. The name means “Holy Lake” and locals treat it as sacred. The water stays warm well into August. A sandy beach on the north shore, a lakeside hotel with a spa, and mirror-still reflections on calm mornings. The drive from Tallinn through the Otepää highlands is half the reward.

Viitna Lakes

Lahemaa border, North Estonia

straighten70 km from Tallinn

Three interconnected lakes in a hollow of the ancient Lahemaa moraine landscape. The water is crystal clear and warmed by shallow sandy bottoms — ideal for families. A campsite on the bank, canoe rental, and a café make Viitna the most complete lake destination near Tallinn. In June the surrounding forest floor is covered in lilies of the valley.

Võrtsjärv

Central Estonia

straighten150 km from Tallinn

Estonia's largest lake entirely within its borders — a vast, shallow inland sea covering 270 km². The water warms up quickly in summer because of the shallow depth. Several quiet beaches around the shore, reed beds full of birdsong, and spectacular sunsets over the water. Local fishermen sell smoked fish by the roadside — one of Estonia's great simple pleasures.

Peipus Lakeshore

East Estonia / Russian border

straighten160 km from Tallinn

Lake Peipus is the fifth largest lake in Europe — a vast inland sea shared with Russia. The Estonian western shore has sandy beaches at Mustvee, Kallaste and Omedu that are almost entirely empty even in peak summer. Old Believers' fishing villages add a unique cultural dimension. The onion fields near Peipus are a centuries-old Russian minority tradition and the roadside stands sell fresh onions and pickles all summer.

Kurtna Lake District

Ida-Viru County, NE Estonia

straighten160 km from Tallinn

A cluster of 38 lakes in a forested landscape near the Alutaguse National Park — the highest concentration of lakes in Estonia. Several are accessible by car with designated swimming spots, and the forest paths between them make for excellent walks. The water is stained a dark amber by tannins from the surrounding bog forest — completely natural and perfectly clean.

Kääriku Sports Centre Lake

Otepää region, South Estonia

straighten210 km from Tallinn

A small, pristine lake at Estonia's main outdoor sports centre in the Otepää highlands. Used by national teams for kayaking and open-water training. The surrounding forest is cross-country ski terrain in winter and hiking terrain in summer. The lake is clear, calm, and used for open-water swimming. Simple accommodation and a sauna on the waterfront complete the picture.

Peak Swimming Season: July & August

July is the warmest month — lake water temperatures of 22–25°C are normal in shallow lakes like Viitna and Pühajärv. June is cooler but the lake shores are empty and the surrounding forests are at their greenest. August is ideal for Peipus — the vast lake holds its heat late in the season and the Old Believers' villages are at their most atmospheric. September is too cool for swimming but stunning for lake fog photography.
