Dog-Friendly Estonia
by Rental Car
Vast forests, empty beaches and farm stays that welcome dogs. Estonia is one of the best countries in Europe to travel with a dog — and a rental car makes all of it accessible.

Why a car is essential travelling with a dog
Public transport in Estonia is dog-tolerant in cities, but the best spots — forests, lakes, beaches and farm stays — are only reachable by car.
Dogs ride free
Estonia has no public transport restrictions on dogs — but forest trails, beaches and countryside are only reachable by car.
Leash laws are minimal
In national parks and RMK forests, dogs may be off-leash on most trails. No fines, no stress — just nature.
Lakes everywhere
Over 1,500 lakes mean your dog is rarely more than 20 minutes from a swim. Most are freely accessible from forest roads.
Dog-welcome stays
Farm guesthouses and forest huts routinely accept dogs at no extra charge. Book early in July and August.
Carry what you need
A boot full of dog food, a crate, towels and muddy paws — only a car gives you that freedom without compromise.
Trailhead access
Most RMK trailheads and beach access points have car parks. No long walks from bus stops in the rain.
6 great spots for dogs
From wild forest trails to dog-friendly beaches and island farm stays — Estonia rewards dog owners who explore by car.
Summer days that never quite end
Estonia in summer offers 18+ hours of daylight, warm lake water and long coastal walks. Dogs are allowed on most beaches before 10am and after 7pm during peak season. The rest of the year — go anywhere, any time.
Suggested 5-day dog trip
Start in Tallinn and loop through the best dog-friendly regions of Estonia.
Tallinn & Lahemaa
Pick up your car in Tallinn. Drive 70 km to Lahemaa National Park. Spend the afternoon on the Beaver Trail or along the Viru bog boardwalk (dogs allowed beside the main boardwalk path).
Käsmu peninsula loop
Drive to Käsmu fishing village. Walk the 12 km coastal loop at your own pace — rocky shores, pine forest and sea views. Stay overnight in Käsmu or nearby Võsu.
Ferry to Saaremaa
Drive 140 km to Virtsu, take the 30-minute ferry to Kuivastu. Saaremaa's wide open landscapes and farm guesthouses are ideal dog territory. Visit Kaali crater.
Pärnu beach & coastal path
Ferry back to the mainland, drive 95 km to Pärnu. Walk the 12 km coastal path to Rannametsa, swim in the sea. Dogs allowed on beach year-round at the southern end.
Otepää highlands & home
Drive 90 km to Otepää. Morning walk in the highlands before the 185 km return to Tallinn. Return the car refreshed.
